Sally Bullard - A Marking Sampler Adaptation

Sally Bullard

Sally’s work is a perfect example of the small marking sampler style worked by many a young girl. She shows her skills with both script and block letters. The model is stitched using wool thread from The Gentle Art which uses more than one skein of some colors; cotton floss options from Weeks Dye Works and DMC are listed in the chartpak and in the supply list found in the tabs below.

Two charts are included here. One for the adaptation with the quote: How letters great and small are wrought. The second chart is the accurate reproduction of the antique.

Marking Sampler Adaptation Series
All chartpaks include the two charts (adaptation and reproduction) plus a separate alphabet card to gather into a collection for handy reference when you need a good, charted alphabet for personalizing your work. Read more about these collectible cards in the tab below.

Other samplers in the series include: Mary Briggs

Stitch count:

Adaptation: 83 x 91
Antique: 85 x 92

Access Commodities: 30 count Pecan Shortbread Legacy linen

The Gentle Art/Simply Wool: Bayberry*, Brown Bear*, Honey Dew, Old Red Paint, Roasted Marshmallow, Ruby Slipper
*In stitching the model, ALL of one skein of Bayberry and Brown Bear were used. An additional skein of these two colors is suggested to ensure you have enough to complete the sampler in the wool threads.

Suggested alternates in Weeks Dye Works cotton floss: Seaweed, Carolina Cecil, Artichoke, Parchment, Cayenne, and
DMC: 3722

Included in each chartpak in the Marking Sampler Adaptation series is a full-color cardstock chart with at least one of the alphabets from its respective sampler. The card is sized as a half-sheet, or 5.5” x 8.5”, and will fit into a mini-sized binder with sheet protectors. Search for ‘mini’ binders on Amazon, Google, or look at paper crafting resources.

My binder has a DIY fabric cover (I used this tutorial from Hello Sewing) and I created a title page for this collection which you can download here (simply print, fold it in half and insert into your binder).

Other options for these cards might be a custom fabric pocket or small zippered project bag.

Some color keys will show "Carolina Cedar" as an option for the wool thread - it should be "Carolina Cecil", from Weeks Dye Works.
